Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is available in many common foods including fresh meat, vegetables, nuts, eggs and wholegrains. It is however easily destroyed by food processing, heating and freezing and so although widely available in fresh foods, deficiency is not uncommon. It works with the other B-complex vitamins and needs biotin and folic acid for its absorption.
The key functions of B5 are:
- the production of energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins from your diet to keep your cells going
- needed to breakdown fats from stores and is often added to supplements that support weight management
- involved in the production of hormones that help your body to manage stress
- associated with helping the body to heal itself by improving the speed which new tissues are produced in wounds.
- associated with healthy skin and hair, it is often added to hair products which claim to improve lustre and shine.
- healthy brain function and nerves
Stress, coffee, tea and alcohol consumption increase your body’s demand for B5.
