Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

Vitamin B3 (niacin) is water soluble and can be made in your body from a specific type of protein.

Good sources of Vitamin B3 include:

meat and poultry, wholegrains, nuts, oily fish, eggs, dairy products, dried fruit and yeast extract.

The key functions of vitamin B3 are:

  • healthy growth and development. B3 is often recommended as part of a pregnancy supplement.
  • the production of energy from sugar that is stored in your muscles and for the supply of oxygen to your cells, it works with vitamin B1 and vitamin B2
  • works with chromium to form a chemical that helps to regulate your blood sugar balance in combination with insulin.
  • healthy skin, a healthy nervous system
  • contributes to the normal structure of mucous membranes, tissues that line body cavities or canals such as the throat, nose, mouth and digestive system
  • has a role in reducing cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health

Taken in its pure form it can cause flushing to the face, some people are more susceptible to this than others. Look for non-flushing niacin, ask at your pharmacy or health shop. Although uncomfortable, the flushing does not last for long and does not pose a threat to your health.
